MEETING MINUTES 
AMERICAN LEGION 
El Cajon Post 303
June 20, 2018
At 1800 - Post members to include John Atkinson, Bill Fuller, Ronny Murphy and Ken Bevil prepared and decorated the tables and setup the boardroom for the dinner and meeting. 
At 1815 - Dinner started with plenty of COSTCO Wraps ordered and picked up by Rob Tade. Also, there were several side dishes and desserts that were donated by Post members. These included, salad from Eddie & Carol Murphy, Shrimp from a guest, cookies from Wes, Ice from Jim McKay, June birthday cake ordered by Mike Wilson and picked up by Rob Tade. Also, snacks provided by Carlos Cuellar. 
Numerous items were donated for the opportunity drawing which is used to fund the dinners.
June birthday members as well as former US Army members whose birthday was June 14, then WW II and Korean War Era Veterans were invited to come to the head of the line for dinner. The attendance sign-in sheet was passed around, and all present were annotated. 
There were 40+ members and guests in attendance at the June meeting.
Opportunity drawing tickets were sold prior to the meeting which are used to help pay for the meal each month. The Post Commander urged people to buy tickets and stated this is how we get our “free” meals. Enough tickets were sold so as to be able to pay for the meal and to give two small cash prizes.
1900 - American Meeting Legion Post 303 was called to order by Post Commander Wes Schermann.
Chaplain Jon Fleming offered an Opening Prayer and then we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to American Legion Constitution. 
The Post Commander pointed out the POW table to members.

Cajon Valley Community Partner of the Year/Stars in Education event.
American Legion breakfasts arranged by Jon Fleming.
Thanks to Jon Fleming for stepping up to the Chaplain’s role.

Congratulations to Post 303 members for having over 100% in membership and making the Post look good at District 22 meetings.
Post Commander Wes reminded Post members to not talk or take cell phone calls during the guest speaker’s presentation. Also pick up any food that falls on the floor.
2nd Vice Commander – Mike Wilson was excused, and Wes Schermann introduced Special Agent Fernando Huerta from the California Attorney General’s office who gave a highly informative talk on the subject of Human Trafficking. This was followed by numerous questions. S/A Huerta was presented with a book and an American Legion Challenge Coin
Officer Reports
1st Vice Commander - Mark Goodman gave the membership report which indicated that we are over 100%. Keep up the good work.
Mark also discussed the Fletcher Hills Elementary School Memorial Day event which included visits to classrooms and how it was a huge success and how the young children appreciated it.
One new member Sal Morales from the Army joined.
2nd Vice Commander - Mike Wilson was excused. 
It was announced that: Rear Admiral Michael Giorgione, CEC, USN (Ret), a former Commander of Camp David will be the July speaker. 
Sergeant Major Devon Lee from MCRD would be the August speaker.
3rd Vice Commander - Eddie Murphy – Gave an update on compliance regulations. Post 303 is in good shape.
Chaplain – Jon Fleming asked us all to keep Dave Williams and Charlene Williams in our prayers. Ken Bevil gave an update on Dave Williams 
Finance Officer - Anne Turschmann gave an update on the post finances which are doing well.
There was enough money raised from the Opportunity Drawing to pay for the meal and give two small cash prizes.
Post Service Officer - Roger West –Roger was excused, and John Atkinson gave out information regarding discount Sea World tickets. It was mentioned that Roger’s wife Tammy had provided beautiful quilts to Don Showe and Chuck Sessions.

Rob, Wes and John Atkinson would be going to the Dept of Calif American legion convention in Sacramento and requested people to take pictures at the Thursday/Saturday breakfasts.

At 1800 - Post members to include Mike Wilson, Bill Fuller , Ronny Murphy and Ken Bevill prepared and decorated the tables and setup the boardroom for the dinner and meeting with assistance from Kay Wilson and several others. 
 
At 1815 - Dinner started with plenty of Pizza from COSTCO ordered and picked up by Rob Tade.  Also, there were several side dishes and desserts that were donated by Post members. These included, salad from Gladys, a fruit bowl from Joe & Bea Brunner, cookies from Wes, dinner supplies from Rob and a May birthday cake ordered and picked up by Mike Wilson.
 
Numerous items were donated for the opportunity drawing which is used to fund the dinners.
 
May birthday member Ronny Murphy, then WW II and Korean War Era Veterans were invited to come to the head of the line for dinner. The attendance sign-in sheet was passed around, and all present were annotated. 
 
There were 50+ members and guests in attendance at the May meeting.

2nd Vice Commander –  Mike Wilson introduced Captain Scott Mulevhill who gave a truly outstanding talk on the Naval Base Coronado and the life of an F18 pilot. This was followed by numerous questions.  
 
Bea Brunner gave a highly informative and interesting talk on the American Legion Poppy Program.

1st Vice Commander -  Mark Goodman gave the membership report which indicated that we are over 100%.
 
Gave a report on the upcoming ceremony at the Fletcher hills Elementary School and urged members to attend.

S/A Fernando Huerta, Calif. Attorney General’s Office, Bureau of Investigations Dept of Justice will speak on Human Trafficking will be the June speaker.

Rob then conducted the third and final round of nominations for the 2018-2019 slate of Post officers with the following results.

Post Commander-Wes Schermann-nominated and accepted.
 
The third round of nominations concluded and vote was conducted. Since there were no opposing candidates all the nominees were voted in by acclimation.

New Business-John Atkinson discussed new recruiting card for members to give out which list the Thursday breakfast location.

2nd Vice Commander – Mike Wilson introduced Commander Robert Potter, USCG who gave a truly outstanding talk on the Coast Guard’s response to Hurricane Harvey in Texas. This was followed by numerous questions.
At the end of his presentation, he received a book on “THE COAST GUARD’s GREATEST RESCUES.

January17, 2018

At 1800-Post members decorated the tables and set up the boardroom for the dinner and meeting.
At 1815 - Dinner started with plenty of Albertson’s fried chicken ordered and picked up Jim McKay Also, there were several side dishes and desserts that were donated by Post members. These included white beans by the Wharton’s potato salad from Roger West, cranberries from Marlene Purdy, salad from Gladys and a January birthday cake ordered and picked up by Mike Wilson.
Numerous items were donated for the opportunity drawing which is used to fund the dinners.
January birthday members, WW II, then Korean War Era Veterans were invited to come to the head of the line for dinner. The attendance sign-in sheet was passed around, and all present were annotated.

The Post said farewell to the Tom and Jerry Whorton who have been long time members of the post 303 family. We will miss them and hope that they stop in to see us when they are in town.

On behalf of Post 303, tribute was paid to 3rd Vice Eddie Murphy in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the capture of the USS Pueblo.
2nd Vice Commander – Mike Wilson introduced Command Master Chief Jason Torey, US Navy SEALS, as our guest speaker. CMC Torey brought his wife and three kids who had a great time The talk was very well received as evidenced by the large number of questions.
At the end of his presentation, he received a book about the SEALS, an American Legion / Navy Challenge Coin and Guest Speaker Certificate presented on behalf of the Post.

1st Vice Commander - Mark Goodman was sick, so Post Commander Wes gave the membership report. The Post is doing outstanding and we are now at 93% of our 2018 goal.

2nd Vice Commander - Mike Wilson. Mike gave a report on the upcoming America on Main Street which will be held on May 19 from 1400-2100. The Post will have a booth .
3rd Vice Commander - Eddie Murphy – Stated the Post was in compliance with all regulations. He mentioned we should thank Bonny’s restaurant for their service to the post. He also pointed out that they have Post 303 pictures on their wall.
Chaplain - Don Showe gave an update. Asked for prayers for Jim Lowe who has stomach cancer. (Jim Lowe has passed away and has gone to Post Everlasting).
Finance Officer - Anne Turschmann addressed her detailed finance report and passed out copies for the members to review. Anne stated that the Post was in good shape financially. There was enough money put into the opportunity drawing to pay for the meal and give a cash prize.
ALR President - Rod Slavin aka IRISH . IRISH paid off his Navy bet by delivering a bottle of Makers Mark to Post Commander Wes. Irish then briefed the membership on the upcoming Poker Run. Previously AL Rider George Glover also gave Wes a bottle of Makers Mark in honor of Army beating SDSU. Wes then in a very generous gesture donated one of the two the bottles of Makers Mark back to the AL Riders for their Poker Run.
Post Service Officer - Roger West –Roger stated they were working on an upcoming recruiting booth at WalMart.

Rod Slavin aka IRISH gave a young lady $100 from the Post 303 for her selling of Girl Scout cookies.
2nd Vice Commander – Mike Wilson introduced Captain Brien Dickson, USN, CO Naval Base Pt. Loma who gave a truly outstanding talk which was followed by numerous questions.
At the end of his presentation, he received a book about the Submarines and another book about the career of a Navy Nuclear submariner and an American Legion Challenge Coin. Additionally, Capt. Dickson received a Guest Speaker Certificate of Distinction. Also, the PAO of Naval Base Point Loma received an American Legion Challenge coin for her efforts in arranging the talk. Post commander Wes accepted a Pt. Loma Base Challenge coin on behalf of the Post
Officer Reports
1st Vice Commander - Mark Goodman gave the membership report. The Post is doing outstanding and we are now at 96% of our 2018 goal.
2nd Vice Commander - Mike Wilson. Mike gave a report on the upcoming America on Main Street which will be held on May 19 from 1400-2100. The Post will have a booth. He talked also about how he, John Atchison and Post Commander Wes handed out 667 US Flags at the US Naturalization Ceremony. 
He also stated that Navy Captain Scott Mulvhill, CO Navy Base Coronado and an F18 pilot will be March’s speaker.
3rd Vice Commander - Eddie Murphy – Gave an update on the new compliance regulations.
Chaplain - Don Showe gave an update. The following Post 303 member have gone to Post Everlasting:

Prayers were also requested for:

Bruce Swinford 
and Ben Saia.
Finance Officer - Anne Turschmann addressed her detailed finance report and passed out copies for the members to review. Anne stated that the Post was in good shape financially. There was enough money put into the opportunity drawing to pay for the meal and give two cash prizes.
ALR President - Rod Slavin aka IRISH. IRISH announced that the Post 303 AL Riders were going to create a new ALR Chapter with Post 364 in Santee and turn in their Post 303 Charter. He gave as a reason that they wanted a brick/mortar building in which to operate to do fundraisers. IRISH stated that the Riders would still keep their individual Legion memberships in Post 303. Post Commander Wes thanked them for their service and wished well in future endeavors.
Post Service Officer - Roger West – Roger stated there was an upcoming food drive but that members would have to register.
He also stated that Post 303 would have a recruiting booth outside of the WalMart in Lakeside on March 17, 18.

Baseball opening on February 24-stated one team has not responded to our offer to sponsor them and we are not going to keeping asking them to let us sponsor them.
Boys State interviews will be held on March 18 at the Elks Lodge.
Rob also brought a laminator for laminating Post 303 membership cards and it was utilized by many post members.
Rob also gave members the opportunity to order name tags.

John Atchison gave a report on how interesting the Oratorical contest was and how our candidate Ivan Jimenez took second place. He encouraged all Post 303 members to attend this event in the future.

The POW Flag was retired, and a Closing Prayer was offered by Post Chaplain Don Showe then the meeting was adjourned.
An opportunity drawing was conducted while the boardroom was cleaned up and supplies put away.

AMERICAN LEGION MEETING MINUTES
El Cajon Post 303
January17, 2018
At 1800-Post members decorated the tables and set up the boardroom for the dinner and meeting.
At 1815 - Dinner started with plenty of Albertson’s fried chicken ordered and picked up Jim McKay Also, there were several side dishes and desserts that were donated by Post members. These included white beans by the Wharton’s potato salad from Roger West, cranberries from Marlene Purdy, salad from Gladys and a January birthday cake ordered and picked up by Mike Wilson.
Numerous items were donated for the opportunity drawing which is used to fund the dinners.
January birthday members, WW II, then Korean War Era Veterans were invited to come to the head of the line for dinner. The attendance sign-in sheet was passed around, and all present were annotated.
There were 50+ members and guests in attendance at the January meeting.
Opportunity drawing tickets were sold prior to the meeting which are used to help pay for the meal each month. The Post Commander urged people to buy tickets and stated this is how we get our “free” meals. Enough tickets were sold so as to be be able to pay for the meal and to give small cash prizes.
1900- American Meeting Legion Post 303 was called to order by Post Commander Wes Schermann. The Post Commander wished everyone a Happy New Year.
Chaplain - Don Showe offered an Opening Prayer and then we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to American Legion Constitution.
The Post Commander pointed out the POW table to members.

All officers were present or accounted for to begin the meeting.
Members with January birthdays were recognized. They included Joe Brunner and Chuck Griener. Tribute was made to the birthday of Martin Luther King.
Visitors and new post members introduced themselves.
Visitors were recognized. They included a friend of Don Showe and a friend of Gary Cutshall.
The Post said farewell to the Tom and Jerry Whorton who have been long time members of the post 303 family. We will miss them and hope that they stop in to see us when they are in town.
Wes congratulated the Post members on all their activities which included:
District 22 Revitalization event attended by John Atchison, Mark Goodman and Wes Schermann.

On behalf of Post 303, tribute was paid to 3rd Vice Eddie Murphy in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the capture of the USS Pueblo.
2nd Vice Commander – Mike Wilson introduced Command Master Chief Jason Torey, US Navy SEALS, as our guest speaker. CMC Torey brought his wife and three kids who had a great time The talk was very well received as evidenced by the large number of questions.
At the end of his presentation, he received a book about the SEALS, an American Legion / Navy Challenge Coin and Guest Speaker Certificate presented on behalf of the Post.

ALR President - Rod Slavin aka IRISH . IRISH paid off his Navy bet by delivering a bottle of Makers Mark to Post Commander Wes. Irish then briefed the membership on the upcoming Poker Run. Previously AL Rider George Glover also gave Wes a bottle of Makers Mark in honor of Army beating SDSU. Wes then in a very generous gesture donated one of the two the bottles of Makers Mark back to the AL Riders for their Poker Run.
Post Service Officer - Roger West –Roger stated they were working on an upcoming recruiting booth at WalMart.
